Profile
Secret Gardens by Carolyn Grohmann
I was born in Edinburgh into a family of keen gardeners and grew up in Inveresk village surrounded by beautiful gardens including the National Trust's Inveresk Lodge. I took a somewhat circuitous route to garden design, dabbling in dental hygiene and completing a Ph.D. in European History, before turning a passion for garden design into a small but successful business.
I formed Secret Gardens in 2000 and since then practical experience, enthusiasm and attention to detail have seen the completion of many beautiful and successful gardens. I favour a friendly, supportive approach to the design process and am dedicated to a more natural method of gardening and landscaping which is gentle on the environment.
Best of all, great friendships have been forged over the years with clients whose gardens continue to develop and flourish and which I take great pleasure in revisiting and photographing. Many of their gardens are on display here in my portfolio pages.
How I Work and What I Charge
For most projects, particularly those of a smaller scale, I charge an hourly rate of £50 for any time I spend on the project. For larger budgets where I am commissioned not only to create the design but also to see through the construction of the garden to completion, I base my fees on a combination of time and a percentage of the total construction cost of the project. As every project is unique, do please contact me directly to discuss your requirements, costs and fees.
