View PortfolioIn 2000 I began designing gardens in and around Edinburgh starting with my own back garden. Over the years I have travelled further afield, from Aviemore to Jersey and further south to my parents’ garden in the Dordogne. I love the challenge of a new commission whether it is a small city courtyard or a large walled garden. I have a number of awards to my name and am proud to work alongside a team of specialists in the landscaping industry, from carpenters to artist blacksmiths, mosaic-makers to expert plantsmen and women.
During my career I have strived to become more professional, to educate myself in every aspect of garden design. However, I have also made every effort to stay in touch with my amateur roots and the enthusiasm which got me into this line of work in the first place. This allows me to be creative without being formulaic. I seek out interesting projects, and welcome clients who are looking for something a bit different, inspiring and even intriguing.
I provide a full design and build package but I am also happy to provide a design-only service or garden mentoring where a full design package is not required.
At an initial meeting I take a comprehensive
client brief to understand the client’s requirements, the site restrictions and budgetary considerations. I then develop a pencil drawing of the design to discuss with the client. Plans are drawn up of the agreed design, construction detail is specified and the project is ready to be priced.
Project management begins with the pricing process, making sure the right people at the right price will build the garden. I check contracts are created, a timetable is set out and then the work commences. I remain in touch with the project throughout ensuring the design is interpreted correctly and built to the right standard.
As the garden is being built and the design becomes a reality, I work with the clients on the planting design. I select plants, source them, and plant them, ensuring there is good soil preparation and appropriate planting for the site and local climate. I advise on maintenance and am happy to return periodically as the garden develops.
For larger projects where I am commissioned not only to create the design but also to see through the construction and planting phases, I base my fees on the percentage of the total construction cost of the project. For smaller projects I charge an hourly rate of £70.
As every project is unique, do please contact me to discuss your requirements, costs and fees.
"The planting in the front garden is exquisite and the colour palette spot on. To the rear, the large lawn area contains a beautiful sunken garden with a rill."
Robin Templar-Williams, BALI Judge
"Carolyn treated none of my desires as ridiculous - the mark of someone who understands a good relationship between client and designer!"
Kate Atkinson
"Carolyn has worked with us on three projects. The results of all three are excellent and we have been delighted with her work. I have no hesitation in recommending her."
Alan McFarlane
"Your designs for the nursery gardens were absolutely spot-on and although I was a bit nervous about the giant sandpits, I have to admit that they were an inspiration. The outdoor play areas were transformed and became a great selling point for the nurseries"
Jacqui Drinkwater, Cornerhouse Nursery
